Chatgpt is aiming to attract 220 million paying customers as it expands its revenue strategy.
OpenAI has projected that some 220 million people will pay for ChatGPT subscriptions by 2030, The Information reported. The company expects roughly 8.5 percent of its projected 2.6 billion weekly users will convert to paying subscribers, versus around 5 percent today. Today, some 35 million members subscribe to either the Plus or Pro plans priced at $20 and $200 per month.
If ChatGPT were to hit its target, it would put it in league with sizable subscription services like Netflix and Spotify. This projection comes as OpenAI seeks to diversify its revenues beyond subscriptions. The company expects about 20 percent of its revenue to be generated by new features like shopping and advertising, after introducing a personal shopping assistant in recent weeks.
OpenAI expected to pull in around $20 billion this year, but the company is also piling up losses. The ambitious growth goal is a sign of the pressure that OpenAI faces to justify its lofty valuation and huge infrastructure investments.
