Workers demand transparent AI deployment with renewable energy and ethical-use policies
Amazon workers gave an open letter to CEO expressing concerns that the company’s rapid AI deployment risks harming both workers and the environment.
The letter, organized by Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, calls on the company to stop using carbon-emitting energy at data centers, ban surveillance operations, and end pressure on staff to use AI tools.
Signatories include engineers, product leaders, marketing staff, and workers. The group has also gained support from over 2,400 workers at other tech companies, including Google and Apple.
The letter reflects growing pressure between tech workers and leadership over how AI is deployed, particularly as companies accelerate investments while facing questions about environmental impact and workforce displacement.
Amazon’s emissions have increased by about 35 percent since 2019, despite the company having promised to become net-zero carbon by 2040. The company also said recently that it would reduce 14,000 corporate jobs.
