Gautam Adani Urges India to Develop Indigenous AI Instead of Relying on Foreign Algorithms
Industrialist Gautam Adani on Sunday stressed that India cannot rely on foreign algorithms and must develop its own AI models to protect jobs, data, and national intelligence.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Sharadchandra Pawar Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence in Baramati, Maharashtra, Adani framed artificial intelligence as the defining force of the fourth industrial revolution and warned that dependence on foreign technologies poses strategic and economic risks.
Adani argued that without sovereign AI capabilities, India risks placing its jobs, data, culture and collective intelligence at the mercy of foreign systems and balance sheets.
He pointed out that history shows technological revolutions expand employment and productivity, and AI should be similarly leveraged to enhance national capacity rather than imported solutions.
The Adani Group has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Vidya Pratishthan to deepen collaboration in AI research, engineering and execution at the new centre.
Adani’s call underscores a growing belief among India’s business leaders that technological self-reliance is essential in a world where AI influences economic power and global influence. By championing indigenous AI development, he is pushing for an ecosystem that aligns innovation with national priorities.
With AI shaping future industries, control over core models and data processing becomes critical not just for competitiveness but for national security.
Reliance on foreign AI could expose India to external influence over its digital economy and critical infrastructure, a risk policymakers are now beginning to confront.
India has already initiated efforts like the BharatGen/Bharat GPT consortium to create homegrown foundational AI models to support local languages and data sovereignty.
