Alexa+ on Fire TV goes free as Amazon expands access beyond Prime
Amazon is making Alexa+ on Fire TV available at no additional cost to U.S. customers with compatible devices, removing the previous need for an Amazon Prime membership or separate Alexa+ subscription for the core television experience.
TechCrunch reported on August 19 that eligible Fire TV owners are being automatically upgraded to Alexa+, Amazon’s generative AI version of its voice assistant. Users do not need to download another app or activate a new subscription.
The move gives Alexa+ on Fire TV a much larger potential audience. Amazon says millions of customers already use Alexa+ on Fire TV and that people with the newer assistant have nearly twice as many conversations through their televisions as users did with the original Alexa.
The biggest difference is conversational search. Instead of naming a specific film or series, viewers can ask for something broader, such as a particular genre or mood, and then refine the request with follow-up questions. According to Amazon’s announcement, users select Alexa+’s top movie recommendation more than 40% more often than they did with the original Alexa.
Alexa+ on Fire TV can also answer questions about what is on screen and control compatible smart home devices. A user can ask Alexa to display a Ring camera feed, dim connected lights or communicate with a paired smart lock.
That pushes the television closer to becoming an AI control point for the home rather than simply a streaming screen. There are limits to the free offer. Amazon says a Prime membership or Alexa+ Standard Plan is still required for Alexa+ use on compatible Echo devices and for some additional Fire TV features. Those include Alexa Routines, access to specific Ring camera moments and advanced Home Modes.
Availability is another restriction. The free Alexa+ on Fire TV rollout currently applies to compatible devices in the United States. Amazon lists current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs and compatible televisions from manufacturers including Hisense and Panasonic.
Amazon’s decision also shows how AI companies can use existing hardware to distribute assistants quickly. The AI Decode’s enterprise AI tools coverage has tracked the wider move toward AI systems embedded directly into software and everyday workflows rather than existing as standalone chatbots.
For Amazon, removing the Prime requirement reduces one barrier between Alexa+ and millions of Fire TV owners. The remaining question is whether free Alexa+ on Fire TV access turns occasional voice commands into regular AI use, and whether Amazon eventually brings the same model to more devices and countries.
